From Drill to Real Readiness: How to Run a School Safety Day That Builds Confidence, Not Fear

A Safety Day is not a checklist of drills.
It is a structured learning experience built around your Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and the Incident Command System (ICS).

Done correctly, it reduces fear, builds confidence, and creates alignment between staff, students, and first responders.

And increasingly, it depends on one critical factor:
Whether your plan can be accessed and used in real time.

This is where tools like the Mobile Emergency Response Plan (MERP) becomes essential—not as an add-on, but as the operational backbone of the entire day.

The Order Matters

The sequence is intentional:

  1. Severe weather drill
  2. Active threat / secure response drill
  3. Earthquake drill (where applicable)
  4. Fire drill – conducted last

Why end with the fire drill?

Because students are already outside.
This allows the school to transition immediately into one of the most overlooked—and most critical—procedures in any Emergency Operations Plan:

Off-site relocation.

Using the MERP during this sequence ensures:

  • Staff can follow consistent, step-by-step procedures across all drills
  • Command staff can access protocols, maps, and assignments instantly
  • Adjustments can be made in real time without confusion

Instead of relying on memory or binders, the plan becomes active and visible.

While everyone is outside:

  • Staff lead students to the designated off-site location
  • Accountability procedures are practiced
  • Command staff operate in real time

This validates:

  • Travel routes
  • Communication methods
  • Student supervision plans
  • Coordination with first responders

Many schools list relocation sites in their plans.
Very few have ever walked the route.

Using the MERP strengthens this process by:

  • Providing mobile access to relocation routes and site details
  • Supporting real-time accountability and student tracking
  • Allowing command staff to coordinate roles and responsibilities live
  • Giving first responders immediate visibility into the plan

When everyone is working from the same platform, relocation becomes coordinated—not chaotic.

The Most Important Part is the Debrief

After each drill, teachers return to the classroom and use a guided, age-appropriate script to ask:

  • What went well?
  • What was confusing?
  • What can we do better next time?

This transforms a drill into learning.
It also gives students a voice, which increases both confidence and compliance.

  • Gaps in procedures
  • Areas of confusion
  • Opportunities for improvement

This ensures that feedback is not lost—and can be translated into action.

The Adult Debrief

At the conclusion of the event, school staff and first responders conduct a structured debrief focused on:

  • What worked
  • What needs to be fixed
  • What requires training
  • What requires resources

This is where your next Safety Improvement Plan is born.

Using the MERP enhances this process by:

  • Centralizing notes and observations from across the day
  • Aligning feedback with specific procedures and protocols
  • Creating a clear, actionable record for follow-up
  • Supporting documentation for compliance and continuous improvement

What Safety Day Builds

A properly executed Safety Day:

  • Reduces anxiety
  • Improves performance
  • Strengthens partnerships
  • Validates your EOP
  • Creates real accountability
  • Supports your School Vulnerability Assessment (SVA) process
  • Provides documentation for continuous improvement

Most importantly, it sends a clear message to your community:

Safety is not a reaction.
It is a system.

And systems only work when they are accessible, practiced, and shared.

Prepare Now – Before Safety Day Arrives

A successful Safety Day is not built the day it happens.
It is built in the weeks and months leading up to it.

That preparation should include more than reviewing a binder.

It should include:

  • Training staff on real-time access to emergency procedures
  • Practicing coordination with first responders
  • Testing communication and accountability systems
  • Identifying gaps before students are involved

Schools can now take advantage of a free test drive of the MERP through June 30—providing a critical window to:

  • Equip staff with mobile, real-time access to plans
  • Practice using MERP during drills and exercises
  • Involve first responders in a shared operational platform
  • Refine procedures before the school year begins

By the time Safety Day occurs, the system is already familiar.

Not theoretical.
Not buried in a binder.
But actively supporting decision-making when it matters most.

Start Now—Before the School Year Begins

Safety Day success is not built the week school starts.
It is built in the months leading up to it.

An Emergency Response Plan should not live in a binder—and it should not be introduced for the first time during a drill.

With a free MERP test drive available through June 30, schools have a clear opportunity to:

  • Equip staff with real-time access to emergency procedures
  • Train alongside first responders
  • Identify and correct gaps early
  • Enter the school year fully prepared
