How to Fund K-12 School Security Improvements

by | Sep 19, 2013 | News

Prompted by the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting, school districts around the nation are scrambling to improve their security. They are looking for both short-term fixes and long-term solutions.

M-CampusSafetySchoolSecurityFundingThe good news is there are many solutions available today; be they increasing the presence of school resource officers (SROs), adding counselors, improving access control or increasing training of campus staff and teachers. The bad news? Many district officials don’t know where to find funds for these improvements.

In this podcast, Gary Sigrist, Jr., who was formerly the REMS project director for the South-Western City Schools and is currently vice president of Impact America, describes the traditional ways his district paid for their upgrades, such as grants, taxes and bonds, as well as non-traditional approaches, such as partnerships with local businesses and law enforcement. He also discusses the pros and cons of President Barack Obama’s school safety proposal, which was unveiled last week.
