How to Create a Safe Learning Environment for Summer School

Safety and Preparedness never take a Summer Break.

Summer school often has a different culture than the regular school year.  Some students may be taking class to catch up with their peers while others are taking electives to get ahead in school.  Classes are generally held in the morning, breakfast and lunch are not served, and there are fewer students and staff in the building.  Creating a safe learning environment for summer school is essential to ensure students can learn effectively. Here are some tips to help you achieve that:

1. Establish Clear Expectations

Set clear rules and expectations from the beginning. Make sure all students understand the guidelines for behavior, participation, and safety measures.

2. Promote Respect

Encourage a culture of respect among students, teachers, and staff. Teach students to value each other’s opinions and differences.

3. Physical Safety

Ensure that the physical environment is safe. Regularly inspect the facilities for any potential hazards and address them promptly.  Secured buildings, locked classroom doors, and knowing where students are always is no different in the summer than the regular school year.

4. Emotional Safety

Create an atmosphere where students feel emotionally safe to express themselves. Many students resent having to make up a class during the summer.  Address bullying or any form of negativity immediately.

5. Encourage Open Communication

Create an atmosphere where students feel emotionally safe to express themselves. Many students resent having to make up a class during the summer.  Address bullying or any form of negativity immediately.

6. Supportive Staff

Have trained staff who are supportive and approachable. Make sure teachers and counselors are available to help students with any challenges they may face.

7. Positive Reinforcement

Use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. Celebrate students’ achievements and progress regularly.

8. Emergency Preparedness

Have an emergency action plan in place in case of any unexpected situations. Conduct drills to ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

9. Parent Involvement
