As superintendents, you know the landscape of school safety and student well-being has expanded far beyond the walls of our buildings. Social media is now where rumors spread, conflicts ignite, and threats circulate at lightning speed. A single impulsive post directly alleging a threat or discussing an unfounded rumor can trigger widespread fear, consume valuable instructional time, and demand immediate crisis response from your team.
This is why initiatives like Pause Before You Post are more than just digital citizenship campaigns—they are essential components of a comprehensive school safety strategy.
- A threat is not a trend.
Do not share harmful posts—report them.
- Stop and think.
What goes online is never truly private and can have lasting consequences.
- Speak up.
Direct concerns to trusted adults or state-approved tip lines (like Ohio’s Safer Ohio School Tip Line: 844-SaferOH).
For many students first coming into acceptable norms and online digital citizenship best-practice, they simply do not know about the seriousness of such posts. Students also may be operating under false pretenses that 24-hour Instagram story or a “disappearing” Snapchat truly can go away forever. As leaders, our words and posts matter. Demonstrating the “pause” principle reinforces credibility.By championing this initiative, you help ensure that social media serves as a tool for connection and learning—rather than a source of chaos and fear.
